The Story

The story of Udai Niwas is linked with the story of Bikaner – a kingdom founded by Rao Bika with the blessings of Goddess Karni Mata – the Guiding deity of the Rathore Clan. – Over the year the destination grew to be not only a military strong hold and a large kingdom but a very heterogeneous self sufficient economy with contributions from not only the rulers but also the merchants, the artisans, the rural population. Today the city is known for its culture, cuisine, art, history, heritage and the happy go lucky life in general. At Udai Niwas we have tried to get our guests to experience all these elements during their stay with us.

The Abode Udai Niwas is a part of a larger heritage bungalow in Civi Lines which was alloted to the grand father of the current hosts- Maharaj Chandra Singhi and Rani Indra Kanwar. The Property was made by Mrs. Chitralekha Kumari wife of Late Maj. Udai Singh Rathore and aptly named after him. Maj. Udai Singh was a distinguished Army Officer & Mrs. Chitralekha was an educationist who left an indelible impact on her children and the society at large by bringing in revolutionary changes in the social setup and also singly bringing up her children. The property resonates the hosts background both as part of the history of the region and as defence children. The family decided to open up their doors to guests and ensure guests at Bikaner have a memorable experience during their stay in Udai Niwas. You can read, listen and also reflect on the age old history of Bikaner from the various books in the library and listen to stories from the passionate hosts.
